Is Your Community Prepared for Floods? Here’s What You Can Do Today

July 15, 2025 FOCUS at Home

Floods are among the most common and costly natural disasters in the United States—and Texas communities are no strangers to their impact. Whether it’s a sudden flash flood or prolonged heavy rainfall, being unprepared can turn inconvenience into crisis. Fortunately, taking a few proactive steps now can make a huge difference when the water starts rising.

Understand Your Risk

Flooding can happen almost anywhere, not just in designated flood zones. Review local flood maps and weather trends, and keep in mind that urban areas are especially vulnerable due to hard surfaces that prevent water absorption. If you’re unsure of your risk, visit FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center or consult your HOA manager.

Create a Flood Emergency Plan

Preparedness starts at home, but planning together as a community multiplies resilience. Make sure your household knows:

  • Where to go in case of evacuation
  • How to turn off electricity and gas safely
  • Who to contact (family, neighbors, local emergency services)

As a community, consider organizing a drill or distributing printed guides with emergency contacts and local shelter information.

Protect Important Documents and Belongings

Store key documents (ID, insurance, medical info) in waterproof containers or scan them and save to a secure cloud service. Encourage residents to elevate electronics and valuables, especially if they live in ground-floor or basement units.

Prepare Your Property

Simple preventive measures go a long way:

  • Clear gutters and storm drains of debris
  • Elevate HVAC units and electrical panels
  • Keep sandbags or flood barriers on hand
  • Seal foundation cracks and basement windows

If your community has retention ponds or flood channels, make sure they are regularly inspected and maintained.

Stay Informed

Sign up for weather alerts through services like NOAA or your local emergency management system. Social media groups, HOA newsletters, and neighborhood apps can also help spread timely information.

Review Insurance Coverage

Standard homeowners insurance often does not cover flood damage. Encourage residents to explore flood insurance options, especially if they live in high-risk areas. Renters should also ask about coverage for personal belongings.

Disaster preparedness isn’t just about reacting—it’s about building peace of mind before the storm. A well-informed, proactive community can recover faster, stay safer, and reduce costs when the unexpected happens.
